During the creation of the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum, the planning group recognized the desirability of a WAC institute that would provide a multi-day experience for new and continuing leaders of WAC and WID programs. A smaller working group (Paul Anderson, Terry Myers Zawacki, Jeff Galin, Chris Anson, Vicki Tolar Burton, and Alisa Russell) developed plans for the first institute to be held in the summer of 2019 at the University of Denver. This institute is intended to help new and prospective leaders strengthen their WAC/WID programs or similar initiatives in the US and internationally, but it is also aimed at supporting more experienced directors who may be facing new challenges or who are seeking to revitalize their programs.
The theme guiding the institute is building and sustaining WAC programs, with small group meetings and workshops organized broadly around strategies for understanding, planning, developing, and leading writing across the curriculum/writing in the disciplines initiatives. Specific topics for the workshops will be determined based on participants’ interests and goals for attending as described on the application form. Small-group meetings will afford mentoring and networking opportunities; individual consultations with institute leaders will also be available. The institute will be limited to 30 participants, all of whom should expect to leave the event with a clear perception and practical strategies for building or revitalizing their own campus-based programs.
